Lung Cancer Screening, Lung Function Testing & Specialist Respiratory Care in Brisbane. From 1 July 2025, the Australian Government launches its long-awaited National Lung Cancer Screening Program, offering low dose CT scans to eligible Australians. This evidence-based program detects early-stage lung cancer and saves lives.

What GPs Need to Know
Patients eligible for free lung cancer screening:
• Aged 50–70 years
• 30+ pack-year smoking history
• Current smoker or quit within 10 years
• Asymptomatic and otherwise well
NBST Services for Lung Cancer Screening Patients
Our respiratory physicians in North Lakes and Clayfield, offer expert assessment and care for patients flagged during the screening process.Â
Specifically, Dr Gerry Olive, and Dr Eric Douglas have advanced speciality training in interventional bronchoscopy.
NBST provides:
- Interpretation of lung nodules detected via low dose CT
- Lung function testing at our North Lakes and Clayfield clinics
- Workup and diagnosis of interstitial lung disease, emphysema, and bronchiectasis
- Access to MDTs for high-risk cases requiring coordinated cancer care
- Support for smoking cessation and risk reduction
Incidental Findings – When to Refer to NBST
While <3% of screened individuals will require urgent review for suspected lung cancer, a higher proportion will show incidental changes.
Refer to NBST for:
- Lung function testing for radiologic emphysema or fibrosis
- Specialist review of high-risk nodules or persistent abnormalities
- Support for unexplained breathlessness or abnormal spirometry
